Meriwether Lewis
Lewis was the leader of the expedition. In 1801 President Jefferson appointed Lewis as his personal secretary. Two years later Jefferson made Lewis the leader of the expedition to find a Waterway to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis knew it would be a hard journey so he invited people to help him along the way. He was also the scientist on the journey.
William Clark
William Clark was the geographer on the journey. He kept a detailed journal of the trip including encounters with the Indians, new species and any type of disease. He also made a detailed map of the land that was explored. This led to the continental railroad and more explorers going to the west. His word was the only knowledge we had of the west.
Toussaint Charbonneau
Toussaint Charbonneau was a French fur trader on the trip. He had a Captive Shoshone wife named Sacagawea. He would serve as the interpreter for the journey. He helped out during Indian affairs. He was needed very much throughout the journey.
Sacagawea
Sacagawea was Toussaint Charbonneau's wife or captive Indian wife. She would also serve as the interpreter on the journey. Because she was a Shoshone she would also help with Indian affairs to get what they need. She also had a son on the journey.
